One of the advantages of Hyper9 is that we go out to all of your VirtualCenters and to all of your VMs to collect information. Using Hyper9, you can get a better handle on your VMware snapshots, and at the same time, get a better handle on controlling your VM Sprawl.
Using the Hyper9 facet feature, you can get a clear view of how many snapshots you have in your environment as well as their distribution across the VMs.
You can also use the search bar helper to get a view of all of the fields that Hyper9 can search on. For snapshots, you can find things out like snapshot creation date, file names, the full path to the snapshot, or even a description of the snapshot. As an example, using the snapshot date, you could search for VMs that had a snapshot created within the last week or day. And more importantly, it can allow us to get a handle on VMs that have had a snapshot created more than 3 months ago. The thought being that perhaps these older snapshots can be removed, rather than taking up valuable storage resources.
A report can also be generated from that data, and it can be created with the attributes that you choose to add so that the report is meaningful to you, your co-workers, or your manager.
The H9Labs Alerting and Monitoring applet can also be leveraged to help with snapshot control. Using it, you can periodically get alerted when certain conditions are met, such as being alerted when snapshots reach a certain age. In this way, Hyper9 can also help you become proactive in controlling the VM Sprawl in your environment.
